Bermuda: A World Away
If pristine beaches, pastel–colored cottages and world-class shopping and sports strike your vacation fancy, look no further than a cruise to Bermuda this summer. Situated just 600 nautical miles off the coast of North Carolina, this pink jewel of an island is indeed a world away. A visit to this self-governing British colony will take you back in time, to a quieter, more civilized way of life. On Bermuda, there are no rental cars and the most popular ways of getting around this 21-square mile island range from motor scooter to horse-drawn carriage to good-old fashioned walking.
The Bermuda cruise season runs from April through October when blue skies and temperatures in the 80s are the order of the day - perfect conditions if you’re into outdoor sports or simply want to beach it. Bermuda boasts no less than six top-notch courses in the seaside capital of Hamilton alone. If golf isn’t your cup of tea, bring plenty of sunscreen and beachwear because there are dozens of beaches to choose from. Options include the convenience of St. George’s Tobacco Bay, the coral bluffs of Somerset Long Bay at King’s Wharf or snorkeling at Horseshoe Bay Beach in Hamilton.
Cruise ships call at three Bermuda ports. Hamilton, the island’s bustling capital city, boasts shopping and sightseeing opportunities. Ships typically dock here at Front Street and there are plenty of restaurants and entertainment choices on the waterfront. St. George’s, the center of the island’s maritime and cultural history, is an ideal spot for self-guided walking tours with visits to the Old State House and Gates Fort. Finally, King’s Wharf at the island’s west end, was built at the Royal Naval Dockyard and features art galleries, craft markets, eight museums, a snorkel park and watersports center.
There’s not a more convenient way to enjoy this island than by a cruise, and its proximity to the U.S. makes it an ideal getaway. You can sail out of Philadelphia, Cape Liberty, NJ, or Baltimore.
